What you see – One of the easiest to locate shops on Jayanagar 5th Block and with ample parking space, Angadi Silks is visited by everyone - from trousseau-shopping brides-to-be to the discerning Bangalore socialite. The first thing you notice when you enter this spacious showroom is the antique deity and urli (pot) in the center of the shop.
Look up and your eye travels to exquisite Thanjavur paintings dotting the walls. The shelves are a riot of colors, from deep reds to earthy russets and royal blues. A trolley with glasses of water is thoughtfully kept at the side and the staff greets customers warmly, because many who come here are regular enough to be recognized. In Bangalore for seven years, a family that is the seventh generation in a line of weavers and master craftsmen runs Angadi Silks. Needless to say, they know their silk and the true source of its beauty.
What you get – A stronghold for all things traditional, Angadi Silks is a one-stop shop if you are looking for wedding wear. One of their specialties is the dhoti for men with a heavy Kanjeevaram border. Priced from Rs. 3,000 onwards, these were created when the men folk of a famous jeweler family wanted something to match the lavishness of their women’s sarees at a family wedding. There are also men’s sherwanis for grooms who want to keep up with the times.
When it comes to sarees, the Kanjeevarams here are unmatched in terms of both quality and design. Angadi Silks has in-house designers and no creation is run-of-the-mill or commonly available outside. The silk used is of superior quality and products are procured from their own looms. On the mezzanine floor, Gharcholas, Benarasis, Gadwals, Cora silks, Bandhinis, Tussars, Ikkats and pure cottons are the other dazzlers with prices that start at Rs. 3,000. Another Angadi exclusive is the handmade Tussar saree with vegetable dye (Rs 4,000 onwards). Zardozi embroidered silk sarees, printed silks, pure chiffons and georgettes are also on offer. The good news? There is a 10 per cent weavers’ discount on all silk sarees.
The first floor treats you to a huge collection of stitched and unstitched dress material. Cottons are priced from Rs. 300 onwards and silks from Rs. 2,000. Lehengas and ghaghra cholis are also available for women and pavadas for little girls. The same floor houses silk ties, silk scarves and stoles for men, as well as traditional Benarasi shawls.
The store creates corporate gifts too and one section includes silk wall hangers, home furnishings, and even corporate files! The handicraft section stocks small antiques though larger pieces are available on order. Special collections are created for festivals like Onam, Durgapuja and Diwali.
Our verdict – If quality and exclusive design is what you want, then this is one of the best and most trusted places to go for buying sarees. It’s also the perfect place for wedding trousseau shopping, as almost everything is available under one roof. Whether you wear sarees everyday or only bring them out of the tissue wrap for special occasions, Angadi Silks has a collection from all over India that can leave you quite spoilt for choice.
And when you are here make sure that you judge the color of a saree under white light and not yellow light. Another tip from MetroMela - always get your silks dry-cleaned from a good cleaner. This also holds true for any fabric with dye as the colors are bound to run.
