What you see – Nomads is a unique handicrafts shop housed in a small room at Mahaveer Mall in Kamaraj Road, Tribal jewelryBangalore. The store looks attractive with its simple décor exhibiting tribal art products.

What you get – Nomads is an initiative of Sabala India, an NGO that promotes traditional Lambani (a tribal community also called Banjaras or Lambadas) craft and supports the livelihood of Lambani women. The store stocks Lambani cushion covers, hand bags and dress materials.

Lambani art typically involves the use of bright colors in its clothes (mainly red) with mirror work and patches in contrasting colors like blue. So you will find lots of such material at Nomads. Skirts, tops and dress materials that come in blue, black, red and yellow prints with hand embroidery and mirror work look great. Kasuti (a traditional form of embroidery practiced in Karnataka) embroidered sarees are also available in a limited range.

Women's hand bags with embroidery and intricate mirror work are charming though in limited numbers. These bags come in vegetable dyes and natural prints, tested against washing. The bags have a very traditional look to them, available for Rs. 250 onwards.

Nomads also has oxidized metal tribal jewelry like armlets, anklets, bangles, necklace sets, earrings, etc. The collection is very unique and available for Rs. 150 onwards. We particularly liked the armlet with ghungroos at Rs. 300. Heavy anklets also have an elegant touch and are priced upwards of Rs. 1,000.

Besides, there are belts adorned with large mirrors and embroidered borders that college going girls would love to wrap around their waist over flowing skirts or even straight fit jeans for that ultra chic look.

Our verdict - All products at Nomads are made by tribal women. These are made from fabric that is either 100% cotton or 100% silk. Plus, they are colored with vegetable dyes giving an eco-friendly touch. The products seem reasonably priced. The staff is co-operative. Parking space is available in the Commercial Street parking lot.
