What you see - If you are in wedding shopping mode then this is one of those must-visit stores for your trousseau needs. Located next to the Pai Vijay hotel in Jayanagar, Varsidhi also has two other outlets in the city. The window display gives you an idea of what to expect inside — this is a world of sequins, zari borders, embroidery and other such dazzling designs. Even the Kanjeevarams aren't just their bright, silky broad bordered self any more. In keeping with the current trend, they have been given an extra dose of sheen with intricate zardosi work.
What you get - The shop is spread across three levels and you get sarees, lehengas, salwar kurtas and fabric here. The first level is for sarees and you are warmly invited to sit down and sample what's on offer. There are a lot of pure georgette sarees with heavy embroidery, crystal work, zari weaving etc. The range starts at around Rs. 3,500. Of course, you can also opt for 'Indian' georgette (not the pure variety) which is cheaper but lacks in quality too.
You can also check out Benares Silks and Kanjeevaram silk sarees in their latest avatar—with intricate Kutchi style mirror work or zari embroidery. While a Kanjeevaram with heavy mirror work, especially around the pallav, will cost you Rs. 12,000, simpler designs start from Rs. 5,000 onwards as well. Purists at heart will also find the usual Kanjeevaram silks without the embroidery. However, you're better off looking for that elsewhere. Varsidhi is essentially a place for glitter and glitz.
They also house the latest trends in six yard silks. Walk up a floor and you can see samples of these in 'ghaghra-style' designer sarees with crystal work which gives the impression of a lehenga after draping. This level houses designer sarees that are ideal for statement-making party wear. This brightly lit floor also has a good collection of lehengas starting from Rs. 10,000 onwards and going up to a lakh! Most lehengas come with pre-stitched cholis with beautifully done kundan work, zardosi embroidery, ari work and lace work. You can get a heavily embroidered lehenga here from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 as well.
The third level at Varsidhi has a god collection of readymade churidar kurta, salwar kameez and some kurtis and tops. They also have fabric here, available in a set and by the meter. You can get a good Benarasi salwar suit set for Rs. 2,000 and pick up silk fabric sets in bandhej. The churidar kurtas are mostly in the post-Sawaariyan trendy Anarkali style and you can buy them sleeveless or get sleeves fixed here. If you are looking for a dressy churidar kurta that you could wear to a wedding, there is a good variety available here within Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 7,000 range. If you buy fabric here, you can get it stitched by their in-house tailor, the salesperson informs us.
Our verdict - Go here if you are looking for beautifully embroidered lehengas and Anarkali style churidar kurtas. The staff is helpful and persuasive enough. Parking is available in the bylanes around the store.
